Texas Senate Committee Holds Hearing On School Choice

The Texas Senate Committee held it's hearing on 'school choice'. State Senator Brandon Creighton from Conroe, authored SB 2, and he led the debate that lasted into the evening.

"Many of our Texas students need options on their learning environment, options that suit their needs the most" Creighton said, while also pointing out that school choice should not be a partisan issue.

"It finally brings Texas in line with 32 other states, both with Republican and Democrat governors" Creighton said, "This legislation, it feels familiar and it should. The senate passed this legislation four times in 2023, but here we are again."

Something state senator Paul Bettencourt know all too well, having passed almost a dozen bills over the years.

"We have debated this bill and passed this bill a dozen times" Bettencourt said, "I think this year as iron sharpens iron, that this will be a year of action, not just a debate."
Lawmakers are looking to spend one-billion dollars on vouchers, allowing parents to pull their kids from public school and send them to private school. Democrats claim it's too expensive.

The bill is expected to pass again in the senate, and will ultimately decided in the Texas House.
