If you've been wondering what all the talk about DeepSeek means, it's really just another artificial intelligence (AI) platform like Open AI's products and others, but it's the circumstances surrounding DeepSeek that make it worrisome.
It's been assumed by many that artificial intelligence programs developed in the United States are the best so far, but for a week the DeepSeek assistant, made in China, has been the most popular free app download at Apple's US and British stores, and it's been shaking the confidence of some people in America's technological lead in AI development.
Among them are people on Wall Street, as the markets fell on Monday led by Nvidia, which could be threatened by the new Chinese app.
But tech expert Jon Schultz says there's a little too much irony in all that.
"Nvidia is supplying the chips for their platform so I find that kind of interesting that Nvidia's stock price dropped on that news."
The financial markets are sweating the details of AI but "it's really a complex environment, that how do we manage all of this data and get instant access to answers to the questions we're looking for," Mr. Schultz says.
All of the controversy -- and perhaps even the financial pain -- of the past week or so can have a beneficial effect, though, because it can help educate people on the more subtle workings surrounding the rise of AI.
"I think it's gonna make people more aware of what's going on, probably educate themselves a little bit about what AI is about, what AI can do what AI can't do.
