While both state and federal officials work tirelessly and spend billions to stop illegal immigration, Harris County has set up a $7 million legal fund for illegal aliens in the county. They're doing this despite Harris County's nearly $130 billion budget deficit.
Precinct Three Commissioner Tom Ramsey is calling these expenditures out as being, at best, a huge waste of money. He said, "This comes directly out of our general fund. We are not in a financial position to be funding these types of things."
On top of being a waste of Harris County taxpayer dollars, Ramsey points out that it's directly oppositional to ongoing efforts to end the border crisis. He said, "This is not anything we need to be doing, given what the administration is doing in Washington. This is inconsistent with what ICE has done over the last week."
He says he's going to try to end this program at the next meeting of Commissioners Court, but it may be something that the State Legislature has to address. Ramsey thinks they will. He said, "Austin is watching what we're doing here. If they see something that's inconsistent with what Harris County should be doing, I think they'll write a bill."
