As the fight for school choice continues here in the Texas legislature, Senator Ted Cruz is filing a school choice bill at the national level. The bill would open up funds to cover tuition and other expenses for K-12 students enrolled in private schools.
But it doesn't stop there. Corey DeAngelis, a Senior Fellow at the American Culture Project, and school choice activist, said that, "Homeschoolers could even use this for curriculum expenses, and any other approved education expenditure. So it kind of operates like an education savings account."
He says that this is a great move for the school choice movement, and supporters of school choice should push for both national and state-level school choice bills. He said, "There's no reason why you can't do both. Why not allow for more tax benefits at the federal level for people paying for their kids' education?"
DeAngelis also said that by pushing for both state and federal school choice bills, the momentum that the school choice movement already has will be "supercharged." He also said that Americans on both sides of the aisle have made their desire for school choice clear, and Democrats and Republicans should work together to pass school choice legislation.
