The Texas Department of Transportation is doing what it can to keep the roads as safe as possible for drivers during this week's round of winter weather.
TxDOT crews have been working for over a week in advance to prepare for the cold rush and the possible snow and ice. Public Information Officer for TxDOT Houston Leo Flores said crews across the state have already pretreated the main roads and freeways used for travel.
"Trucks have been treating those main arteries like 45, 69, 290, 610 that we call tier 1 roads," he said.
The most likely window for snowfall and possible freezing rain is late Monday and into Tuesday. TxDOT crews are applying a brine solution to help prevent ice from sticking on the roads.
"It's a mixture of sodium that we use that lowers the freezing point," Flores explained. "You can expect to see those trucks out there treating those roads to prevent ice from forming, especially over those bridges and overpasses.
Flores reminds drivers to slow down and drive cautiously, especially if driving over bridges, overpasses and connector ramps.
