Even the most southeastern parts of the state are bracing for cold temperatures.
While forecasts are continually changing, it looks like areas south of I-10 will likely be getting a wintry mix this week too. Local meteorologists say temperatures are expected to be below freezing Tuesday morning with projected precipitation. The likely snow amount totals for Houston and Galveston are 1 to 2 inches, but it's also not out of the possibility that Houston gets 3 or 6 inches.
Galveston County Judge Mark Henry suggests that people stay in if they can on Inauguration Day and Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
"Monday's a holiday for most people so it'd be a great time to not travel and then we'll see what the weather brings us so we can plan our next move for Tuesday," Henry said.
At this time, Henry is telling people to take care of their pipes, plants and pets. Forecasts are changing daily, but snow is projected for the area. The county does not have any snow removal equipment or ice salting trucks at their disposal.
Just a few years ago, the area saw an ice storm so they are prepared for the arctic cold weather. Entergy Texas, which along with CenterPoint services Galveston, said they have their crews prepared to respond to the winter weather.
Brazoria County Judge Matt Sebesta told KTRH News that road and bridge crews will be out ahead of any precipitation.
"They are prepped and ready and will be taking care of county bridges," Sebesta said.
TxDOT will have crews taking care of the larger and much more traveled roadways and bridges. Sebesta said it's better to be safe than sorry and they'll be ahead of the curve to make sure folks are safe.
"This weather event has been hyped for over a week now and folks know the drill," he said. "We'll be ready."
