Should Texas Sue The Federal Government For Cost Of Educating Illegals?

Just before Joe Biden leaves office, he is being sued by the red state of Oklahoma for $470 million dollars, which the state says it has had to spend on educating illegal immigrant children.

What about here in Texas? Well, the $470 million wouldn't even scratch the surface. According to data from a couple of years ago, it costs Texas more than $8 billion -a year- to educate illegals.

And if that's not bad enough, there's a law in place that forces the state to do so.

"Because of that Plyer vs. Doe case from 1982, states are forced to pay for the K-12 education of illegal alien children" said Chris Russo, president of Texans for Strong Borders.

So what that means is, Texas needs to deal with that law first here, before it can go ahead and sue the federal government.

"Urging an overturn of that, or at the very least seeking a reimbursement from the federal government just like Oklahoma is doing" Russo told KTRH, "This is something that the Republican Party, the grass roots have expressed an interest in getting accomplished this session."

With president-elect Trump set to take office next week, the border will finally be closed. But the damage has already been done over the last 4 years, and even Governor Abbott has acknowledged that the cost is a real issue. So maybe Texas will follow Oklahoma.

"I think it's a great idea" noted Russo, "I actually think it's worth the state pursuing a challenge to Plyer vs. Doe."

The 89th Texas legislative session is now underway.
