Special counsel Jack Smith has resigned after investigating President-elect Donald Trump for two years.

Smith was tasked by the U.S. Justice Department and Attorney General Merrick Garland with investigating claims that Trump was involved in election interference in the 2020 presidential election as well as the Mar-A-Lago classified documents case. The report on his investigation is expected to be released soon.

The announcement of Smith's resignation came in the footnote of a court filing Saturday.

"The Special Counsel completed his work and submitted his final confidential report on January 7, 2025, and separated from the Department on January 10," the note said.

Smith's resignation comes as no surprise since Trump has indicated he would fire Smith once he takes office next week.

DOJ cases against Trump were dropped by Smith in November after his election victory.
