Memorial services for former president Jimmy Carter begin this weekend.
Carter died on Dec. 29 at the age of 100. He served one term in the White House beginning in 1976.
Starting Saturday, Carter's body will be escorted from the Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in Americus, Georgia, to his hometown of Plains, where it will pause for a moment at his childhood farm. The motorcade will then head north to Atlanta for a moment of silence at the Georgia State Capitol, where Carter once served as governor. A private service will then be held at the Carter Center in Atlanta. The public will be able to pay their respects at the Carter Center starting Saturday night through early Tuesday.
Public visitation will end early Tuesday morning. Then at 9:30 a.m., there will be a ceremony marking Carter’s final departure from the Carter Center. His family will then travel with his body to the U.S. Capitol in Washington where Carter will lie in state. Lawmakers will be able to pay their respects and the public can visit through early Thursday.
A national funeral service will take place at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Washington National Cathedral. A motorcade will drive back to Plains following the funeral.
Finally, Carter will be buried alongside his wife Rosalynn at the Carter home. A private interment ceremony is scheduled for Thursday evening. The Navy will conduct a ceremonial flyover to honor Carter’s service both as a lieutenant and commander in chief.
