Four Men with Ties to Tren de Aragua Arrested at Border on New Year's Eve

Texas Governor Greg Abbott says four confirmed members of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua were arrested this week after trying to illegally cross the border into the U.S.

Gov. Abbott said the four men attempted to cross the border on New Year's Eve in Val Verde County but were arrested by Texas Department of Public Safety officials.

On Dec. 31, DPS troopers encountered a group of 22 total immigrants from Colombia, Mexico, Peru and Venezuela. 11 of them were arrested for criminal trespass. Among the 11, nine of them were from Venezuela and claimed they were going to San Antonio, Irving and Corsicana. DPS officials became suspicious of four of the man based on their interviews. Agents confirmed their affiliations to Tren de Aragua after a search of their cell phones.

The confirmed members were identified as 39-year-old Segundo Ocando-Mejia, 27-year-old Pedro Luis Salazar-Cuervo, 18-year-old Antonio Joe Urruttia-Rojas and 18-year-old Levi Jesus Urrutia-Blanco.

In September, Governor Abbott signed a proclamation that declared the Tren de Aragua gang as a foreign terrorist organization.
