Rep. Chip Roy Doesn't Believe Mike Johnson Has the Votes to Remain Speaker

Representative Chip Roy (R-TX) doesn't believe House Speaker Mike Johnson has the votes to retain that role.

“I remain undecided, as do a number of my colleagues because we saw so many of the failures last year that we are concerned about that might limit or inhibit our ability to advance the president’s agenda,” Rep. Roy told Fox Business Network’s “Varney & Co.” on Tuesday. "I don’t believe he has the votes on Friday and I think we need to get the conference together so we can get united."

Those words from Roy came just one day after President-elect Donald Trump pledged his endorsement to Johnson. Trump told reporters at his New Year's Eve party at Mar-a-Lago Tuesday night that his endorsement of Johnson still stands and that he hopes other lawmakers who are on the fence will back him.

"He's the one that can win right now," Trump said. "Almost everybody likes him and others are very good too but they have 30 or 40 people that don't like them."

On Friday, House lawmakers are set to vote on the speakership. Roy is one of a handful of representatives who have said they are indecisive or not supporting Johnson at all to hold on to the position because of his recent track record.

"The failure before Christmas, I cannot overstate, it’s a glimpse to come if we don’t organize the conference to be able to deliver for the American people," Roy added. "We are not going to be able to bend on the things that matter. We must cut spending if you want inflation to go down and for people to afford to live in this country.”

Rep. Roy mentioned representatives Byron Donalds and Jim Jordan as two people who would make great speakers.
