Syrian dictator Bashar Assad has fled the country as Islamist rebels have stormed and conquered the capital city of Damascus.

Syrian television reports that Assad, who succeeded his father as Syria president, fled with his wife and three children to Moscow after being granted asylum by Russian president Vladimir Putin.

A group of men released a video on Syrian state TV saying that Assad had been overthrown and all prisoners are free.

"Long live the free Syrian state that is to all Syrians and all their sects and ethnic groups," they said.

Crowds of Syrians have gathered in the central squares of Damascus. Social media videos have shown people celebrating by tearing down statues and signs of Assad.

The rebels have looked to overthrow the Assad dynasty during a near 14-year civil war in the country. The Syrian civil war has brought more than 500,000 deaths.
