Matt Gaetz has withdrawn his nomination to be President-elect Donald Trump's Attorney General.
"While the momentum was strong, it is clear that my confirmation was unfairly becoming a distraction to the critical work of the Trump/Vance Transition," Gaetz said in a post to X Thursday.
Gaetz resigned from Congress as a Florida representative right after being nominated by Trump to be top prosecutor. He said he will continue to help Trump and the rest of his administration moving forward.
"Trump's DOJ must be in place and ready on Day 1," he added.
The President-elect responded to Gaetz's decision to withdrawal, saying in a post to Truth Social, "Matt has a wonderful future and I look forward to watching all of the great things he will do!"
