Venezuelan national and illegal alien José Ibarra has been convicted of murdering Laken Riley, a Georgia nursing student.
Ibarra faced numerous charges, including three counts of felony murder, one count of kidnapping, one count of aggravated assault, among others. Ibarra waived his right to a jury trial, resulting in State Superior Court Judge H. Patrick Haggard convicting him on ten total charges.
Ibarra attacked Riley back in February while she was jogging on the University of Georgia campus. During the trial, prosecutors alleged that Ibarra had gone out "hunting" for women. Prosecutor Sheila Ross stated, "He killed her because she would not let him rape her."
Just hours after handing down the guilty verdict and after hearing victim impact statements from members of Riley's family, Judge Haggard sentenced Ibarra to life in prison without parole.
