It's hard to believe, but it was 60 years ago that Ronald Reagan delivered his famous, "A time for choosing" speech. It was a speech in support of fellow Republican Barry Goldwater, but one that almost fits perfectly with where we are today.
"Somewhere a perversion has taken place, our national unalienable rights are now considered to be a dispensation of government and freedom has never been so fragile, so close to slipping from our grasp as it is at this moment" Regan said to the gathering in Los Angeles on October 27, of 1964.
Political commentator Jeffrey Lord, who worked for Reagan at the White House, said that Reagan's speech set the Republican Party on course to become the party of the people.
"Reagan was signaling that this is not going away, and it was the beginning of the Republican Party's march to the blue collar portion of America" Lord told KTRH.
And ironically, the political divide with the left in the mid 60's, is very similar to where things are today. Reagan's response proves it.
"Our Democratic opponents seem unwilling to debate these issues, they want to make you and I believe that we're to choose just between two personalities. Well what of this man that they would destroy? And in destroying, they would destroy that which he represents, the ideas that you and I hold dear."
Once again, freedom will be on the ballot tomorrow.
