GOP Candidates Back Trump's Call To Close Education Department

According to a new report from the leftist Washington Post, former president Donald Trump's plan to close the Education Department is gaining support from Republican candidates across the country.

"Their main job, which is to better educate kids, they have failed at that and it should be abolished, Trump is absolutely right" said Sherrie Sylvester, distinguished senior fellow with the Texas Public Policy Foundation.

If Trump does shut it down, it would save a ton of money, and like so many other things, it would return control back to state and local governments, rather than having everything run by federal officials.

"The reason that we have the Department of Education is, Jimmy Carter established it to fulfill a campaign promise to the teachers unions. It's not because it was needed" Sylvester told KTRH, "In Texas increasingly we are working to push laws to make sure that parents have the most control over what goes on in their public schools."

Donald Trump has vowed repeatedly on the campaign trail that it will ultimately happen, but shutting down the Education Department will still need approval from Congress. Last year, 60 Republicans sided with Democrats and voted against it.
