Scammers are using AI tools to try and steal from homeowners.
Home title theft has been around for a long time although it doesn't happen too frequently. Scammers are using these AI tools to fake deeds which can help them transfer ownership of a home away from it's rightful owner. Essentially, if scammers can fake a deed, they can potentially get a house.
Retired Las Vegas Police Lt. Randy Sutton said this is not a new phenomena, but with the progression of AI, scammers are finding ways that make it easier to steal someone's identity and then their house title.
"There are several avenues that the crooks utilize in order to commit home title theft," Sutton said.
Scammers are increasingly relying on artificial intelligence to commit their crimes. Sutton believes AI is making it easier for them to commit the type of crime of home title theft.
"Every time technology advances, the criminal adapts to it and utilizes it to their own benefit," he said.
AI has the great ability of collecting great amounts of information and data efficiently. Some AI tools might be able to find vacant property in a database faster than a human could. They can also identify homes without mortgages attached to them, making them a target for a refinancing scheme.
"People can have their homes stolen from them without their knowledge," said Sutton.
Sutton suggests always looking for when there are changes to your credit and getting title insurance as ways to protect yourself from having your home stolen.
