The Harris County Attorney’s Office said a court has denied an attempt from Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton to shut down an initiative that attempts to help low-income families.
Harris County can move forward with the "Community Prosperity Program” following the decision from the 165th District Court on Friday. The Texas Supreme Court originally halted a similar initiative for low-income communities known as "Uplift Harris" that included paying out $500 per month to low-income households. The Texas Attorney General’s Office’s made a successful attempt previously to stop it.
The new program will provide financial aid to approved families living below the poverty line. The money would be on preloaded debit cards that can be used for things like groceries, housing, utilities and other bills.
