Kamala Harris has been accused of lifting passages from her 2009 book, Smart on Crime: A Career Prosecutor's Plan to Make Us Safer, from multiple sources, including even Wikipedia. She co-authored the book with Joan O'C. Hamilton while serving as the District Attorney of San Francisco.

The plagiarism was initially discovered by Dr. Stefan Weber, known for his work in exposing plagiarism, and was reported by journalist Christopher Rufo on X. Rufo posted detailed examples of Harris including entire paragraphs from other publications in her book without proper citation.

Rufo says he independently verified Dr. Weber's claims of plagiarism, and Fox News Digital reported that they were also able to find clear examples of Harris including verbatim and near-verbatim quotes from various sources, including a 2008 NBC News report, a press release from the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, a Wikipedia page, and a report from the Bureau of Justice Assistance.
