2 Dead, Dozens Possibly Injured in Gas Leak at Deer Park Plant

Two people are dead and 35 were reported as triaged after a chemical release at an industrial plant in Deer Park Thursday.

According to authorities, the release happened at the PEMEX facility at 5900 SH-225.

The City of Pasadena says the chemical released was hydrogen sulfide. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a colorless, highly flammable, and toxic gas with a strong odor of rotten eggs. There were shelter notices in place for near the plant but those were lifted Thursday night.

Officials had to wait several hours before they could enter the area where the leak happened. An investigation is ongoing into what caused the leak.

This is a developing story.
