Many Houstonians have complained that there has been a change in the taste and even the smell of their drinking water. The City announced that they are aware of the issue and have already determined the cause.
In a press release, the City said that routine testing showed the water contains naturally occurring compounds like geosmin and MIB. The City says these compounds are harmless, but they do affect the odor and taste of the water.
HPW recommends chilling the water or adding ice, as well as filtering it through a carbon filter, such as a Brita filter. You can, of course, also add slices or drops of lemon to improve the flavor.
HPW encourages any affected Houstonians to report water issues to 311 via phone at (713.837.0311) or email (311@houstontx.gov).
