Harris County Sued By Paxton Again Over Uplift Harris

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has again sued the Harris County Commissioners Court for trying to bring back their “guaranteed income” program "Uplift Harris" which Paxton has called "unlawful."

Paxton says the attempt by Harris County to bring the program back violates the previous ruling from the Texas Supreme Court. The Attorney General Paxton sued Harris County back in April to stop the program, whose goal is to redistribute public money to more than 1,900 Harris County residents. The Texas Constitution explicitly rejects such programs.

In a second attempt to enact the program, the Harris County Commissioners Court voted to enact a similar process that included significantly increased administrative costs.

“Harris County acts as though the Texas Constitution does not apply to them and as though they do not have to abide by the Texas Supreme Court’s rulings,” Paxton said. “Using public funds in this way directly violates the law. Harris County is willing to undermine the legal process out of apparent desperation to push this money into certain hands as quickly as possible.”
