Houston Mayor John Whitmire is following through on promises made when campaigning and backing the blue.
He announced on Monday that Houston police cadets and new officers are receiving a $10,000 pay raise, with cadets receiving a $5,000 incentive upon graduating from the academy.
Whitmire, while speaking to cadets on Monday, thanked them for their commitment.
"You follow the law and training...this Police Chief and this Mayor will back you up," he says.
Whitmire added that the model in Houston is to be different from places like Austin, where the District Attorney prosecutes officers for trying to be tough on crime.
"The model we want in Houston is law enforcement...protect the public...protect your family," he says.
The mayor added the pay raises are helpful, but a new contract will be negotiated next year with the department.
