After a long feud with the government of Brazil over free speech, the Brazilian Supreme Court has ordered X to be shut down within the country. This is just the latest example of action being taken directly against a platform.
Internet and privacy attorney Travis Crabtree told KTRH, "This follows what happened with Telegram's CEO in France. You are seeing what people perceive as western democratic countries taking action against social platforms."
Crabtree says this is why we shouldn't take our freedom of speech in America for granted. He said, "We have the First Amendment, and most of the rest of the world does not. Even in Europe, freedom of speech is not at the same level of protection that we have here."
And without those First Amendment protections, nothing is stopping a politically motivated shutdown of X in Europe.
