Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo gave a 'state of the county' address, before taking part in what was described a 'fireside chat' at a luncheon for the Greater Houston Partnership.
During the talk, Hidalgo highlighted some of the key issues including flooding and transportation. But she also said a priority for her, is mental health.
"As you guys know, I took a leave of absence in September of last year, it was about 7 weeks" Hidalgo said, " That's some of what we're working on, we've invested some American rescue plan dollars, I believe it's around $10 million dollars."
But former political candidate Alexandra Mealer gave her own assessment to KTRH.
"We're trying to pass universal basic income for a handful of lucky winners, but we can't do the foundational jobs of county government" said Mealer, "And we're going to drive out all the growth because of these policies."
Polices that are really the -true- priorities.
"More administrative gloat, more centralization, no shortage of funding for DEI and equity programs" Mealer told KTRH, "But when it comes to the nuts and bolts of this county, it's woefully inadequate."
In summary, it's probably not the best time to be taking a victory lap.
"After several failed elections, multiple staffers indicted, and a criminal justice system that is far from functional, it's pretty rich to say look at us as a model."
She also noted that Harris County actually had a good model of strong leadership for decades, and that the county has been in decline ever since Hidalgo and the Democrats took over.
And there are also reports that the Harris County Commissioner's are planning an 8% increase in property taxes.
