The City Is Broke But Still Considering A $25-million Art Contract

Even though Houston Mayor John Whitmire has said the city is "broke", apparently there is still enough money to fund a new $25 million dollar art project.

"We know a couple of months ago the mayor talked about the city being broke" said Charles Blain, president of Urban Reform, "We just had a hurricane, and fire stations not having generators. We have a lot of issues and a lot of needs in this city."

Just another example of the Dems disconnect in the city of Houston.

"I think art is probably at the bottom of that list, especially when you already have a large art collection" Blain told KTRH, "When you look at needs versus wants, I definitely think this a want, and a want that could wait."

In case you didn't know, the city of Houston has pretty large art collection, with over 800+ pieces.

"My frustration is, is that they're not actually going to go and get the old art they have or just fix up the old art that they have, they're just going to keep buying new art" noted Blain.

The City Council still has to vote for the new $25 million dollar contract, but the City's Civic Art Ordinance requires 1.75% of the budget to go to art.
