A manhunt is underway after a Harris County Deputy Fernando Esqueda was shot and killed in the line of duty late last night.

It happened along Italian Cypress Trail, which is near Tidwell and Beltway 8. This started as a call for an assault of a Little Caesar's employee by a person who was upset that the order was incorrect.. That assault, which led to a search for the suspect in that incident.

Esqueda found the vehicle and was talking to another detective when he was ambushed and shot multiple times. He was taken to the hospital, where he died.

Esqueda is 28 years old, and had been with the department for five years. He was also a member of an elite task force.

Officials say they have SWAT teams set up in two locations, that they believe they know who the suspect is, and that he will be in custody in a "timely manner." The shooter has been described as a Black man wearing a hat with a black jersey with unknown writing on it.

Police are now searching for Ronnie Palmer, who is a person of interest in Esqueda's murder.
