Employers are looking for more work from freelancers in 2024.
An MDRG research group found that over 90% of surveyed companies plan to work with freelancers more this year. That number was just 42% in 2023.
200 surveys were collected from freelancers where over 80% of them also said they expect to take on more work opportunities this year.
Andrew Crapuchettes is the CEO of RedBallon, a job recruitment site. He says the hiring process overall is undergoing a major shift and Gen Z isn't contributing to society as well as it should.
"We see population decline, we see baby boomers retiring and we see a Gen Z workforce that is not doing productive things in the workplace," Crapuchettes said.
Plenty of employers see the bringing on of freelancers is a faster and more efficient process compared to hiring an employee who has to undergo multiple days or weeks of training. Other reasoning behind the attraction to freelance work is larger corporations are trying to keep their costs down and also not have much of their workforce get laid off at the same time.
Crapuchettes said employers are having to change the way they recruit and hire to fill positions.
"The labor market is no longer a vending machine," he said. "You (employers) need to be much more thoughtful and intentional in the hiring process."
