Can ERCOT Survive The Coming Summer?

We have already had some struggles with power this year, so as we head into another hot, stormy Texas summer, people are beginning to wonder if ERCOT will be able to keep the lights on. The good news is, as long as things don't get too hot, we should be able to handle it.

Energy expert David Tice says that as long as we don't have multiple back-to-back days of 115+ degree temperatures, we should be able to keep up. Tice did, however, warn that green energy is creating a risk for Texas power.

Tice said, "We have so much wind and solar in the ERCOT system, there are times when there's just not quite enough power to keep the AC on as cool as we would like it." He says Texas needs to expand more into the more reliable energy sources like natural gas and nuclear.

Tice also says that thankfully, Texas has more than enough experience with major weather events, so if a hurricane or major storm hits, we shouldn't have to worry about major weeks-long power outages.
