It shouldn't be a surprise, but an atheist group has 'forced' a Florida elementary school to disband a 'Fellowship of Christian Athletes' club over complaints that it was 'unconstitutional'.
"Unfortunately that happens more than you would think" said Justin Butterfield, attorney for First Liberty Institute, "A lot of school officials have been taught that as soon as something religious comes up, that they have to ban that, and that's not what the law says."
Actually what the law says is just in opposite. In fact, cancelling the Christian club is the real crime.
"The Supreme Court has repeatedly said that the First Amendment protects students religious viewpoints" Butterfield told KTRH, "And if they want to have a club, that the students are free to have a religious club."
Sadly, this is a problem that is growing, and is only going to get worse.
"Unfortunately, there's a lot of school officials who are misinformed" noted Butterfield, "But there's definitely a fight, and that's what First Liberty does. We stand and fight for those who can't fight for themselves."
We reached out to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, but they declined our request to be interviewed.
