According to a new report , the FBI underreported violent crime numbers for 2023.
"It's political, it's underreporting" said former FBI Deputy Assistant Director, Danny Coulson, "I think crime is skyrocketing, and we've got an election coming up here and these people want to get re-elected. They're not going to tell you that it's bright sunshine in the middle of a tornado."
The crimes are being 'reclassified', just like we've seen here in Houston.
"There's no if and's or but's about it" said Andy Kahan with Crime Stoppers, "What's happened with HPD certainly shows that, and it's difficult to truly gage where we actually stand as far as our crime stats go."
Either way, the stats are not good. According to a recent Gallup poll, nearly 80% of Americans say they personally worry about crime and violence.
The report also reveals that the U.S. is really on the verge of a public safety crisis.
