Despite clear protections of private militias and gun training in the Second Amendment, Democrats are proposing new legislation that could ban everything from shooting ranges to private armed security. The "Preventing Private Paramilitary Activity Act of 2024," recently filed by Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) and Sen. Ed Markey (D-MD), takes aim at groups who “publicly patrol, drill, or engage in techniques capable of causing bodily injury or death,” as well as groups who “assume the functions of a law enforcement officer, peace officer, or public official, whether or not acting under color of law.”
While the claim is that this bill will help prevent another January 6th, conservative attorney Michelle Maples told KTRH that it will likely do more harm than good. She says it's a clear violation of our rights to keep and bear arms, form well-regulated militias, and assemble to discuss ideas, rights which are all guaranteed in our Constitution's First and Second Amendments.
Maples says at the end of the day, the only thing the bill really does is "create a bigger problem: preventing law-abiding citizens from possessing firearms, training with those firearms, and watching out for one another."
