Ancient Species Discovered in Texas

An ancient amphibian species discovered in Texas has been named after Kermit the Frog. The fossilized skull of the species was originally uncovered in a rock formation in Texas in 1984, but the fossil had been sitting in a collection at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History for nearly 40 years. The amphibian species has been dubbed Kermitops gratus. The species likely lived in prehistoric Texas over 250-million years ago. Researchers say the tiny skull is only one-point-two inches long and is a precursor to modern salamanders, frogs and limbless snake or worm-shaped amphibians.
