After years of being in Senate leadership for more than 20 years, Mitch McConnell is finally stepping aside. But that doesn't mean that anything will change. The current favorites to replace McConnell aren't really the strong conservative types that we have grown used to seeing in the House of Representatives.

Political consultant Matt Langston told KTRH, "Ultimately, the people that are in line to take over his role, they are insiders. So we aren't likely to see a big shift in the Senate." Right now, the current favorite to replace McConnell, and the only candidate that has formally announced candidacy, is Sen. John Cornyn of TX.

Cornyn has grown increasingly unpopular with his constituents and is expected to face a strong primary in 2026. Langston thinks that could hurt his chances of securing the job. He said any senator casting a vote will consider those factors. He thinks the GOP will be looking for someone who will bring more stability to the Senate's GOP caucus.
