An off duty Harris County Deputy has been killed after being involved in an accident in downtown Houston Saturday night.

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez reported the crash on X just after 10:30 p.m. Saturday, saying the deputy was transported to the hospital in critical condition. Then a little after midnight, the sheriff posted that the deputy had died.

The deputy has been identified as 62-year-old Ronald Bates, who had just finished his shift.

He worked for the sheriff’s for more than 30 years.

“He was a great man and loved by many. And, he’s going to be missed. He definitely left a mark in this agency. And we’re going to do everything we can to support the family as they as they go through their grieving process,” Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said.

”He will be deeply missed.”

The crash is under investigation.
