Today is Runoff Election Day; Houstonians Set to Pick New Mayor

Houstonians will select a new Mayor when they go to the polls for today's runoff election.

State Senator John Whitmire has been leading the polls for months now, but was unable to get to the threshold needed to win the race outright in November. Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee is challenging him.

Both are hoping to replace Sylvester Turner, who has been Mayor since winning election in 2015. He is term limited out.

There are several other races on the ballot, including for City Council, where Tony Buzbee is challenging incumbent Mary Nan Huffman. And Chris Hollins, responsible for Harris County's mail in vote in 2020, is in a runoff for City Controller against Orlando Sanchez.

Polls will be open from 7AM to 7PM.
