As record numbers of illegal immigrants continue to flood the southern border, there is new evidence that many of these crossers are getting help from the Mexican government on where to cross. A recent report from Border Hawk News cites a reporter embedded with a caravan of foreign nationals in Mexico, saying they were given GPS coordinates on where to gather at specific locations along the Rio Grande. In some cases, the reporter says the illegals were directed to the exact locations where temporary razor wire was removed.
Todd Bensman, author and senior fellow at the Center for Immigration Studies, has seen similar actions carried out on this side of the border with the help of U.S. officials. "Intelligence officers on the American side telling the Mexicans how many they can bring over at a time, so the American side doesn't get overwhelmed," he says. "That has happened."
Bensman tells KTRH he can't independently confirm the Border Hawk News report, but it would not be difficult for reporters to verify if there is U.S. coordination with Mexico on those GPS-assisted crossings. "Just go over to those coordinates and see what's happening," he says. "If reporters see groups of 50 or 100 being sent over the river...and then everybody behind them has to stop and wait for a couple of hours, that's called a clue."
Even if U.S. border agents are complicit in coordinating these 'mass swims' or removing Texas' border barriers, Bensman doesn't fault them. "I would never demonize these border patrol agents for doing what they're told to do as part of their jobs," he says. "I think they are being told what to do directly from above...as policy from the White House and DHS."
