Harris County Dials Up Plans to "Re-Envision, Re-Energize" NRG Park

Harris County Commissioners Court is ordering up at least two alternative plans to "re-envision, re-energize and plan for the future of NRG Park."

Ryan Walsh, CEO of the county's Sports and Convention Corporation, explained Tuesday the entire complex is need of $500 million worth of deferred maintenance. Current events only bring in between $60-65 million in revenue.

"We've had the chicken or egg conversation about do we wait for the development to come to us, or do we do it? We've all communally decided we need to do it. Why can't we be the change we want to see in not just NRG Park, but the community around it?"

The decision comes on the heels of a proposal by a local group called Astrodome reIMAGINEd, to use private funds to develop the Astrodome.

The corporation will seek input from both the Texans and Livestock Show and Rodeo, as well as the community, before bringing those proposals back to commissioners court.

"There will be considerable green space, activity space, recreational space, even on casual days, not just on game days," says Bishop James Dixon, HCSCC board chairman.

"We're talking about something very big and bold, that's going to encompass those kind of facilities, that can attract people all the time."
