California Senator Dianne Feinstein has passed away after being in failing health for more than a year. She was 90 years old.

Feinstein was in her sixth term as the senior Senator from California. She was first sent to DC in 1992.

Feinstein was elected as the first female Mayor of San Francisco in 1978, and was the first woman elected Senator in California.

Feinstein was present in the Senate on Wednesday and cast a vote in the morning, according to the congressional record. But, she missed two other votes in the afternoon.

Governor Gavin Newsom will appoint her successor. He has said he would appoint an interim Senator in the event of Feinstein’s death.
