Free Houston Methodist Prostate Screening Today

Here are a couple quick facts about prostate cancer as a gentle reminder that you should get a screening and let you know about how and where you can get a free one this morning. Houston Methodist sent us this information:

There is a free prostate cancer screening event and health fair that Houston Methodist is hosting [today] this Sat., 9/30 from 9am-1pm at Emancipation Park Conservancy, 3018 Emancipation Ave., Houston, TX 77004.

 Did you know one in six Black men will develop prostate cancer in his lifetime? Houston Methodist physicians will be on site to lead conversations about the importance of seeing your doctor for preventative screenings like the one used for prostate cancer screening.

Event information:

  • 9am: Event begins and registration opens.
  • 9:15am-10:15am: Special guest, Carl Landry**, former Houston Rockets player, will obtain prostate cancer screening (PSA blood test) to show how easy & valuable this test is.
  • 9:30-9:40am: Speaker: Dr. Kimberly Sims*, Internal Medicine, Houston Methodist Primary Care Group// Topic: the importance of seeing your primary care physician and preventative screenings.
  • 10:30-10:40am: Patient speaker shares his prostate cancer experience.
  • 11:30-11:40am: Speaker: Dr. Brian Miles*, Urology, Houston Methodist Specialty Care Group//Topic: importance of prostate cancer screening
  • 11:45am: Light lunch served.
  • 1pm: Event concludes.

Event attendees will receive a PSA test, which is a blood test primarily used to screen for prostate cancer. Screenings are offered at no charge. One in six Black men will develop prostate cancer in their lifetime. Screening and early detection play a valuable role in finding and treating these types of cancers.
