School is back, but apparently parents are still very much concerned about safety in public schools, as well as the on-going battle over education indoctrination.
According to the Texas Home School Coalition, new data shows that parents pulling their kids from government schools so they can be home schooled, remains at record highs.
"What this newest data shows is that even after Covid was done, the number of students withdrawing from public school to home school remained at record highs" said Jeremy Newman, V.P. with the THSC, "We don't believe that Covid created an artificial high and everything went back to normal after that, we think it set a new normal."
At least 30,000 kids a year are leaving public schools, and that's just in grades 7-12.
"When we go around the state and we host different events, parents just seem to feel like if they want any influence at all over the environment their child is raised in, and what they're taught, that they're going to have to do it themselves" Newman told KTRH.
The THSC estimates that right now 8-10% of students in Texas are currently home schooled.
That could number may increase even more, if and when Texas passes school choice. Governor Greg Abbott is expected to call a special session next month in Austin, to focus on school choice.
