Despite the current, 2nd 'special' session for the Texas legislature, lawmakers did allow Governor Greg Abbott to sign into HB 1819, which will officially put to an end discriminatory juvenile curfews that were aimed at homeschool families.
"We had a state legislator file this legislation, and it was not controversial at all" said Tim Lambert, president of the Texas Home School Coalition, "The governor signed it into law, and so on September 1st these kinds of curfews will not be legal in the state of Texas."
The bill is a game changer for the home school community, which is on the rise across the U.S., as well as here in Texas. Sadly, from 2019-2020, Texas police made 11,680 arrests for curfew violations.
"No city or county in the state of Texas can now adopt a curfew limiting juveniles being out in public" Lambert told KTRH, "So, criminalizing students because they're out in public is just wrong, and finally the state of Texas agrees with us."
Juvenile curfews were first implemented in the state of Texas back in the 1890's.
