Six New State Parks Are Being Created in Texas

You wanted them. You voted them. You’re going to get them.

Plans to develop six new state parks in Texas are underway, and a couple will be a little more than a stone’s throw from Houston.

Rodney Franklin, Director of Texas State Parks, tells KTRH News a currently inaccessible site in Liberty County will have amazing plant diversity on about 1700 acres of land space. “Davis Hill Natural Area is going to be a very unique landscape, about 4400 feet of elevation caves, about an hour’s drive from the downtown Houston area.” A commemorative issue of Texas Parks and Wildlife Magazine has all the details of options for your vacation plans for years to come.

Powderhorn Ranch is going to be developed into a state park about two hours away in Matagorda Bay. “You’ll have screened shelters to stay overnight, you’ll have some RV spots, and you’ll be able to paddle in the Bay,” Franklin adds. Most of the area will remain a Wildlife Management Area. Take you binoculars.

Palo Pinto Mountains State Park will be in North Texas; the Dan A. Hughes Unit of Devils River State Natural Area is in Southwest Texas will open next year; northwest of San Antonio the Albert and Bessie Kronkosky State Natural Area is in final stages of planning; if you want to explore the natural history of the Lone Star State you’ll want to make a vacation trip to the 39,000-acre Chinati Mountains State Natural Area when it opens.

You’ve got some camping trips in your future.
