Poll: Americans Still Think “It’s the Economy, Stupid”

A new poll finds “strengthening the economy” is the public's top policy issue.

As political consultant James Carville famously said in 1992, "It's the economy, stupid."

31 years later, it's still the economy. Pew Research found 75% of Americans say it should be a priority in 2023. Political strategist Jessica Colon isn't surprised.

“Americans are still feeling the brunt of these rising inflation rates,” Colon said. “They continue to see prices at the grocery store for basic items rise.”

Besides the economy, no other single policy area stands out on Pew's report of the top issues. Falling to the bottom of the list: “Dealing with the Coronavirus”. Colon says it's a sign Americans aren't thinking about the pandemic on a daily basis like they were just a couple of years ago.
