Educators Looking to Make Changes

The State Board of Education appears to be softening its stance against school vouchers. The 15-member board took a preliminary vote on Thursday night to revoke its November decision asking legislators to reject vouchers or anything else that reduces public school funding. A final vote on the issue is scheduled for today. On Tuesday of this week, Gov. Greg Abbott stated his clearest support so far for school-choice policies including vouchers.

The state's proposed takeover of the Houston ISD is meeting some local pushback. Dozens of parents, teachers, and students held a news conference on Thursday expressing their opposition to the takeover. The Texas Education Agency first moved to take over the HISD school board in 2019 because of reported misconduct by trustees and ongoing low performance by Phillis Wheatley High School. The district sued and obtained a temporary injunction, which the Texas Supreme Court threw out last month.
