Free Event This Morning Offers Information About Medicare

United Health Care is offering the following free Build A Better You health and wellness event:

UnitedHealthcare and the United Methodist Strengthening the Black Church for the 21st Century Invite African Americans in Houston to a Health and Wellness Experience

African Americans approaching retirement and other Medicare beneficiaries will learn about Medicare and their health care coverage options at events brought to you by UnitedHealthcare and the United Methodist Church Strengthening the Black Church for the 21st Century

WHO / WHAT:

UnitedHealthcare will host its Build A Better You health and wellness education program in Houston to help African Americans ages 60 and above and other Medicare beneficiaries learn more about Medicare and their health care coverage options. UnitedHealthcare will host the Build A Better You series in collaboration with the United Methodist Church Strengthening the Black Church for the 21st Century (SBC21) to continue helping people access the resources and information they need to make informed health care coverage decisions. Build A Better You encourages people to plan for healthy living.

The event – brought to you by UnitedHealthcare Insurance Company and the SBC21 – will bring attendees together for a Medicare workshop to promote health literacy and holistic health. Attendees will learn about the basics of Medicare – including the different parts of the program, eligibility requirements, and enrollment windows – to help them make informed health care coverage decisions.

The Build A Better You experience will also feature tips from renowned speakers to motivate and engage attendees with helpful information to plan for continued healthy living.

  • For the first time, National Transformational Speaker, Reverend Telley Lynnette Gadson joins Build A Better You to share how she lost nearly 200 pounds and survived depression by altering priorities in her life. She will share her health and wellness journey and encourage African Americans approaching retirement to be good stewards of their physical, mental, and spiritual health.
  • Attendees will also hear from UnitedHealthcare’s Rita Tolbert, who will facilitate the Medicare education portion of the events. Rita Tolbert has more than 25 years of experience in the health and life insurance industry. She works passionately to help African Americans who are Medicare eligible gain a clearer understanding of Medicare and take control of their health care through education.

 About Reverend Telley

Reverend Telley Lynnette Gadson was appointed to serve as the Hartsville District Superintendent effective July 1, 2021. This historic appointment makes Reverend Gadson one of the youngest Pastors ever to be appointed to the Bishop’s Cabinet in the South Carolina Annual Conference. Prior to this appointment, Pastor T, as she is affectionately known, served as the Senior Pastor of Saint Mark United Methodist in the Greenville District for 8 years; and for 14 years as the Pastor of Saint Mark United Methodist Church (Sumter, SC) on the Hartsville District. In addition to these appointments, she has also served Saint Matthew (Taylors, SC) and Mount Zion (Sumter, SC) United Methodist Churches in her 22 years of pastoral ministry.

In addition to her work in local churches, Pastor T was invited by former President Barack to serve on his national prayer team during his election and was later invited to the White House as a special guest in both 2010 and 2011.

 WHEN / WHERE:

The event is from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. CDT at Trinity East UMC, 2418 McGowen St.

The events are open to the public, and there is no cost to attend. For more information, visit ABetterYou.info.

 WHY:

According to the CDC, nearly 9 out of 10 Americans have limited health literacy skills and struggle with understanding health-related information. This can affect their ability to manage their health and can lead to misunderstanding doctors’ instructions and consent forms, improper use of medications, and even missing out on free or low-cost preventative services.

UnitedHealthcare remains committed to improving health literacy in the multicultural communities they serve to empower them to make informed health care decisions and help people live healthier lives.
