Conservatives Call For New FTC Commissioner ‘Skeptical’ Of Big Tech

Conservatives are calling on Senate Republicans to push for a new FTC commissioner who will stand up to Big Tech.

Critics of tech giants like Google and Facebook are asking Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell to think carefully about who he wants to fill an upcoming vacancy in the Federal Trade Commission. Republican Commissioner Noah Phillips will step down this fall. Jon Schweppe, with the American Principles Project, says now is a chance to turn the page.

“What we’re hoping for is to have a commissioner appointed who at least is a little more skeptical, who looks at some of these big mergers and acquisitions with a little more skeptical eye,” Schweppe said.

He believes tech platforms have been able to get away with anti-competitive acquisitions and predatory conduct in the last decade that has given them an unfair advantage in the marketplace.
