Texas Lawmakers Looking at Gun Control

At the state level, a Texas Senate committee looking at the deadly Uvalde school shooting will meet in two-weeks. Democratic Senator Chuy Hinojosa says he hopes the Senate Special Committee to Protect All Texans will seriously review school safety when it meets June 21st. Hinojosa wants the Texas government to enact a ten-day waiting period for long gun purchases, a red flag law, and criminal background checks for all weapons. Hinojosa says he believes most gun owners are responsible, but he wants to raise the long gun purchase age limit to 21.

And locally in North Texas, Dallas County Commissioners are urging Gov. Greg Abbott to call state lawmakers back to Austin for a special session on gun control. The county resolution calls for universal background checks and raising the minimum age to buy a semiautomatic rifle from 18 to 21. Commissioners passed the resolution in response to last month's deadly school shooting in Uvalde.

This week, Tarrant County Commissioners will vote on a similar measure.

Abbott hasn't called a special session, but has asked legislative committees to make recommendations on possible changes to state gun laws.
