Customer Rage against Restaurant Workers is growing into Real Violence.

Recently a Houston Jack-in-the-Box worker was shot in the hand by a customer who didn't want to pay for extra ranch sauce. Michael Berry spoke to the man who says the weekends are the worst. "I have no problem with our clients --- but mostly on weekends, Friday and Saturday nights, we have more customers complaining about little things like getting something the customer didn't order."

Jonathon Horowitz, with the Hospitality Consulting Company Convive, says it's almost a trend. "There has been a significant rise in Customer Abuse in the restaurant industry. It's not just in fast food establishments, although we see that a lot!"

Ready to Hire: Restaurants Chronically Understaffed

Restaurants are already working with fewer staff and higher overhead. Restaurant workers - especially in fast food places - are facing more harassment then before from customers lashing out at them. Horowitz saying rising prices and post-covid lockdown nerves are making tempers shorter and a worker in a window who gave you a number 16 instead of a number 15 is an easy target. Horowitz says most workers have been trained in handling these people.

"The first thing obviously, is to stay safe. Don't engage or even provoke the customer. The best thing to do is try to get a manager."
