With the countdown already underway to the 2024 presidential election, some Republicans are speaking out against former president Donald Trump. It's not that they don't support Trump, they just don't think he should run again for president.
"Unfortunately for president Trump, even if you blame him or you do not blame him for the insurrection, that closed his window" said UH political science professor Jacquie Baly, "A lot of people felt that took things too far, even some of his fans and supporters felt the way."
One of the keys for Donald Trump during his win in 2016, was picking up the independent voters. But now, even as bad as Biden has been in office, some aren't sure that enough voters will come back to Trump in 2024.
"It's really sad, because if you look at his policies he was extremely effective" Baly told KTRH, "But all of those things were ignored because sometimes he had a very harsh tone, and he embraced that, but some Republicans just did not care for that, and some independents as well."
So again, it's not that they are against Trump. In fact, if you look at the red wave that rolled through Virginia, it was Trump policies that led to victory. So who should the GOP go with?
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is the favorite. "He did such a wonderful job with Covid, and he's doing such a great job in leading his state" Baly said, "They are thriving, they like him, and he is a good conservative figure, and something that's never mentioned, he's in his 40's which is totally contrast to what we have in the White House right now."
Professor Baly also pointed out that it was Donald Trump who recently won the CPAC straw vote, for who should run for the Republicans, and it was a by a wide margin over DeSantis. There is also the possibility of a Trump-DeSantis ticket in 2024.
